A prominent 31-year-old Premier League footballer is under investigation for multiple rape allegations involving two women, as well as sexual misconduct with a third.
According to reports from island media, the unnamed Premier League star, who earns a six-figure weekly salary and has represented his country at the international level, was first arrested in July 2022. Despite the serious nature of the accusations, he was released on bail and continued playing for his club.
The Metropolitan Police recently submitted a "full dossier" of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for review. A spokesperson confirmed that detectives remain in close contact with prosecutors as the case progresses. Back in 2022, The Guardian reported that the player's club was aware of the allegations as early as autumn 2021.
The situation has sparked wider discussions about how football clubs handle serious allegations against players. Dame Caroline Dinenage, chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, emphasized the need for accountability. Speaking to the BBC, she said: "Footballers' position in the public eye means it is crucial that any allegations of sexual abuse are dealt with appropriately."
Dinenage also highlighted the importance of empowering the new regulator to enforce standards regarding equality, diversity, and inclusion within football clubs. "As part of the new regulator's role in setting licensing conditions, we want to see it have the power to censure clubs for their approach and lack of progress when it comes to improving every aspect of equality, diversity and inclusion," she added.
While no formal charges have been filed yet, the case remains under scrutiny, and further developments are expected in the coming weeks. The footballer, his club, and the Premier League have not issued any public statements regarding the matter.
