AC Milan are monitoring Leon Goretzka’s contract situation at Bayern Munich, with the German midfielder potentially available on a free transfer this summer.
AC Milan may not have the financial firepower of Europe’s elite, but the club have built a reputation for sharp timing in the transfer market. That strategy could again come into play with Leon Goretzka, whose contract at Bayern Munich is entering its final months.
The 30-year-old’s deal at the Allianz Arena expires this summer, and there has been no strong indication that Bayern are eager to extend it. Had the club been intent on renewing, talks would likely already be at an advanced stage.
Milan watching closely
According to Italian media, including La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan are closely following developments. The attraction is obvious: Goretzka could be available without a transfer fee, a scenario that aligns perfectly with Milan’s recent recruitment model.
However, finances remain the key obstacle. Goretzka currently earns around €7 million per year in Munich — a level Milan would struggle to match. Any move to Serie A would almost certainly require the player to significantly lower his salary expectations.
Bayern future in doubt
Goretzka has been with Bayern since 2018, when he arrived on a free transfer from Schalke 04. Over the years, he has been a regular presence in Bayern’s midfield rotation, contributing both physically and offensively, but his role has become less central amid tactical changes and squad evolution.
If Bayern are prepared to let him walk, Milan sense an opportunity — albeit one that hinges on compromise rather than competition.
Career and international pedigree
A product of Bochum, Goretzka moved to Schalke in 2013 before establishing himself at the highest level in Munich. On the international stage, he has represented Germany national team since 2014, earning 67 caps and scoring 15 goals.
