AEK Athens signed João Mário on loan from Beşiktaş after Anthony Martial’s move to Pumas. The Portuguese star will face Celje in the Conference League.

AEK Athens have wasted no time in responding to the departure of Anthony Martial, who has joined Pumas UNAM in Mexico. The Greek club, who will face Celje in the UEFA Conference League, have already secured a high-profile replacement.

João Mário arrives in Athens

According to reports in Greece, Portuguese international João Mário is set to arrive in Athens today to complete a loan move from Beşiktaş. The 31-year-old brings a wealth of top-level experience to AEK’s midfield and attack.

A career across Europe

João Mário rose to prominence at Sporting CP, earning a €45 million transfer to Inter Milan in 2016. His time in Serie A was disappointing, but he rediscovered his form at Benfica, where he scored 36 goals and provided 26 assists in 149 appearances.

Last season in Turkey, he featured 27 times for Beşiktaş, scoring five goals. His versatility and experience are expected to be a major boost for AEK, especially ahead of their European campaign.

Filling Martial’s shoes

Martial, once a long-serving forward at Manchester United, had only recently joined AEK before leaving for Mexico. His departure left a gap in the squad, but the swift move for João Mário has reassured fans that the team will remain competitive at home and in Europe.

João Mário’s best years at Benfica: will AEK see that version again?

João Mário’s move to Benfica in 2021 marked a turning point in his career. After struggling to live up to expectations at Inter Milan, he found consistency in Lisbon, quickly becoming a leader both on and off the pitch. His ability to dictate tempo, control midfield transitions, and contribute with goals made him a vital figure in Roger Schmidt’s system.

In the 2022/23 season, João Mário enjoyed arguably his finest year as a professional, scoring 17 goals in all competitions — a remarkable tally for a midfielder — while also providing key assists in Benfica’s domestic and European campaigns. His calmness in possession and tactical intelligence stood out as Benfica reclaimed the Portuguese league title.

At Benfica, he thrived in a team built around quick transitions and high pressing, adapting perfectly to a role that demanded both defensive responsibility and attacking flair. This version of João Mário was a far cry from the inconsistent player fans had seen at Inter.

For AEK, the big question is whether the Portuguese international can replicate that Benfica form in Greece. If he settles quickly, his experience and leadership could transform AEK’s midfield, giving them a proven winner ahead of their Conference League tests.
