Hull City chairman Acun Ilicali has appointed Sergej Jakirović as head coach, citing his winning mentality and belief in his football philosophy after an extensive recruitment process.

Hull City chairman Acun Ilicali has officially explained why the club chose to appoint Sergej Jakirović as their new head coach ahead of the 2025/26 season, praising his track record and leadership qualities.

The Bosnian-Croatian coach, who previously managed Maribor and Kayserispor, has signed a two-year deal with an option for extension. According to local media, his salary at the English Championship club will be around £2 million per year.

"Following a thorough and extensive recruitment process with Mustafa Yokes, Jared Dublin and Martin Hodge, we are delighted to have secured the services of Sergej Jakirović," Ilicali stated.

"We believe in the football he will bring to our stadium, and most importantly, he has proven himself to be a winner throughout his career. My goal for our club has not changed since the first day I took charge, and I believe in Sergej."

Jakirović’s move marks a significant milestone for a coach from the Balkans, as few have reached managerial roles in English football. Known for his attacking approach and strong win record, he most recently helped Kayserispor secure survival in the Turkish Süper Lig.
