Alejandro Balde has defended Lamine Yamal, saying the 18-year-old’s contributions are extraordinary despite recent criticism over form and lingering injury concerns at Barcelona.
Alejandro Balde has spoken out in support of Lamine Yamal, who has faced increased scrutiny in recent weeks due to fluctuating form and ongoing fitness issues. The Barcelona winger has been recovering from a persistent pubic injury suffered while on duty with Spain.
Yamal was involved in the spotlight during the recent El Clasico defeat against Real Madrid, where he struggled to make his usual impact and later became involved in post-match exchanges with Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior.
Off the pitch, the 18-year-old also drew attention for comments made during a livestream ahead of the match, where he joked about Real Madrid, remarks that circulated widely on social media.
However, Yamal was back in the starting lineup for Barcelona’s win against Elche, where he scored early in the match following a strong run and assist from Balde. He played 88 minutes before being replaced by Roony Bardghji.
After the final whistle, Balde defended his teammate and highlighted the challenges that come with being a rising star at one of the world’s biggest clubs.
“It’s true that he’s always in the spotlight, but I think Lamine is a great professional despite his young age. What he is doing at only 18 years old is incredible. Sometimes people don’t appreciate what he does as they should. At his age, what he’s doing can’t be described in words.”
Yamal has already achieved significant milestones, including becoming a European champion at 16 and helping lead Spain to the UEFA Nations League final before turning 18. However, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick noted that the youngster is still managing pain from his pubic injury.
“He has to manage his injury; he’s disciplined. He has to train, undergo treatment… he’s doing it. I can’t say the injury is over; it comes and goes.” Flick said.
Barcelona now travel to face Club Brugge in the Champions League, before an away match against Celta Vigo ahead of the international break. The team currently trails Real Madrid by five points in La Liga.
