Manchester United are negotiating for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, but strict financial constraints mean major signings depend on player departures.

Manchester United have reportedly begun negotiations with Wolverhampton Wanderers over the potential signing of Matheus Cunha, as reported by the Daily Mail. The Brazilian striker, who has impressed with 14 goals in 28 Premier League matches, has emerged as one of the club’s priority targets—but the deal won't be simple.

After a disastrous season and with increasing financial pressure, United are facing a summer where spending will be tightly restricted by Premier League financial sustainability regulations (PSR). The club’s recent transfer strategy of solving problems by throwing money at them is no longer viable.

Cunha has a €70 million release clause, and Wolves see no reason to sell below that price. Interest from other Premier League giants only strengthens their position.

With Rúben Amorim likely to take over at Old Trafford, the club has already shown a shift in strategy. Amorim was recently seen speaking with Cunha after United’s league match against Wolves—an interaction that has further fuelled speculation.

However, United's ability to move decisively in the transfer market will depend on sales, especially of high-wage players. Names like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Casemiro, and Alejandro Garnacho are reportedly at the top of the list of potential departures.

Crucially, European qualification could change everything. If United win the Europa League, they would not only salvage a Champions League spot but also regain some financial flexibility heading into the summer.
