Andrea Pirlo has become the leading candidate to replace Italy's head coach after reportedly receiving the backing of Paolo Maldini and Leonardo.

Italy's next head coach after
Paolo Maldini reportedly identified the former midfielder as his preferred choice to lead the Azzurri.
Following Maldini's appointment as the Italian Football Federation's (FIGC) new technical director, the search for Italy's next national team coach has taken a new direction.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Maldini and his special adviser Leonardo are expected to play a decisive role in selecting the coach who will guide Italy into the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign.
Pirlo overtakes more experienced rivals
Until recently, Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini were widely regarded as the strongest candidates, while Pep Guardiola was also mentioned in media speculation.
However, Pirlo has now reportedly moved to the front of the race.
The 47-year-old is currently in charge of United FC in Dubai. Earlier in his coaching career, he won the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2021 and also managed Fatih Karagümrük in Turkey and Sampdoria, where his spell ended in August 2024.
Maldini and Leonardo trust Pirlo
One of the key factors behind Pirlo's candidacy is believed to be his long-standing relationship with Maldini and Leonardo.
The trio spent a decade together at AC Milan, winning multiple domestic and European trophies between 2001 and 2011.
Italian media also report that Maldini previously wanted Pirlo to become Milan's head coach, highlighting the confidence he has long placed in the former World Cup-winning midfielder.
Salary could also influence the decision
Financial considerations may also work in Pirlo's favour.
Compared with several of the other candidates, his salary demands are believed to be significantly lower, making him a more realistic option for the FIGC's budget.
Although no official decision has yet been made, an increasing number of Italian media outlets now describe Pirlo as the strongest contender for one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world football.
