The last few weeks have been turbulent for Celje and its chairman Valerij Kolotilo, who has been fighting off constant rumours about Albert Riera’s possible departure before the end of his contract. The situation escalated when Riera’s agent, Andy Bara, appeared at the Crvena zvezda – Lille match sitting alongside Zvezda director Zvezdan Terzić. Bara even openly suggested that a move to Belgrade could be possible.
Crvena zvezda launched a full media push for Riera, forcing Kolotilo to publicly deny any chance of letting his coach leave early. At the same time, speculation emerged that Dinamo Zagreb were also interested.
Speaking for MaxSport, Bara cut through the noise and explained why a transfer to Maksimir is essentially impossible – and the reason is simple: money.
According to Bara, Riera earns “unreal” money at Celje, reportedly close to a million-euro package when bonuses are included. Dinamo, despite being a regional giant, cannot match that.
“The story of Dinamo and Riera is not realistic. Dinamo already have a good coach. Riera? Dinamo is a big club, it would be a step forward, but financially it’s very difficult. He earns unreal money in Celje – far more than Dinamo could offer. I don’t believe he would lower his salary enough to come to the Croatian league. And then there’s the buyout fee… too many obstacles,” Bara said.
With Crvena zvezda cooling their interest for now, Kolotilo has gained some breathing room to try and convince Riera to extend his contract. But with strong interest across Europe and only a few months left before Riera becomes free to negotiate, time is not on Celje’s side.
