Former Manchester United wonderkid Angel Gomes has left Lille to join Marseille, remaining in Ligue 1 after Premier League hopes fell through due to high wage demands.
Angel Gomes, once hailed as one of England’s brightest young talents, has completed a move to Olympique Marseille after parting ways with Lille. Despite interest from clubs in England, the former Manchester United prospect will remain in Ligue 1.
Gomes, now 24, had hoped to return to the Premier League, but his wage demands reportedly proved too high for interested English clubs. As a result, Marseille swooped in and secured his signature, capitalizing on Lille’s squad overhaul and the departure of key players like Jonathan David, who recently joined Juventus.
The move is seen as a blow to Lille, who lost a valuable asset estimated at €20–30 million without receiving a transfer fee. Gomes made 134 appearances for the club, establishing himself as a creative midfield force during his time in northern France.
Born in London to Angolan parents, Gomes has strong ties to Portugal, where he previously played for Boavista. He holds dual nationality and spent much of his development there. He is also the godson of Nani, the former Manchester United and Portugal winger.
Gomes rose through the ranks at Old Trafford, where he was once considered a future star. He became one of the youngest players ever to debut for United, but consistent first-team opportunities never materialized, prompting his move abroad to reignite his career.
Now at Marseille, he joins a club in transition but rich with ambition. Ligue 1 may not have been his first choice, but it remains a league where he can shine—and perhaps still earn that Premier League move in the future.
