Italian media are thrilled with the form of Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay, who scored his first goal in Serie A yesterday.
Scott McTominay is a product of Manchester United's youth academy, a player who has practically spent his entire life in the red jersey of the Red Devils. He joined United's academy at the age of six and left the club this summer, after 22 years of playing at all levels, to join Napoli.
McTominay was never destined to become a regular starter for Manchester United, and with his departure, United's manager Erik Ten Hag may now have to face some uncomfortable questions, as the Scotsman is thriving in Serie A and playing a pivotal role in Antonio Conte’s system.
Yesterday, he scored his first Serie A goal against Como, his second in a Napoli shirt, and the Italian media noted that McTominay’s role is crucial to Napoli’s playing system.
"You can feel his presence in attack and all over the midfield," wrote La Gazzetta dello Sport, describing McTominay as the 'key element' in Conte's tactical setup. Corriere dello Sport highlighted his 'tremendous energy', adding that McTominay 'covers ground, wins duels, is dangerous in the opponent's penalty area, and does a lot, really a lot of work in defense.'
