Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered an assist in Real Madrid’s win over Real Sociedad, earning strong praise from coach Alvaro Arbeloa ahead of a key Champions League clash.

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised Trent Alexander-Arnold after the defender played a decisive role in the 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad.

The England international made only his sixth La Liga start of the season but immediately influenced the match, assisting Gonzalo Garcia after just five minutes. The early goal set the tone as Madrid recorded their eighth consecutive league win and moved to the top of the table.

“We are not discovering anything new about Trent. He understands the game and recognises spaces very quickly,” Arbeloa said after the match.

The former Liverpool star arrived in Spain on a free transfer last summer. His first months were disrupted by injuries and rotation, which prevented him from building rhythm and consistency. Because of that, speculation about a possible return to the Premier League appeared, with Manchester City among the clubs linked.

However, his display against Sociedad showed why Madrid pushed to sign him. Instead of staying wide, Alexander-Arnold repeatedly stepped into midfield, helping circulation and creating overloads during build-up phases.

“Not only the pass for the goal but everything he gives us. He is intelligent and understands perfectly what we ask,” Arbeloa added.

The right-back started ahead of Dani Carvajal, who returned from injury and replaced him in the final half hour. With the defensive line balanced, Federico Valverde could operate higher up the pitch, where his energy helped Madrid dominate the second half.

Vinicius Junior scored twice and was another standout performer.

“For a month, he has played at a very high level. He changes matches, not only with goals,” Arbeloa explained.

Kylian Mbappe remained an unused substitute due to knee discomfort after playing the full match against Valencia. The staff avoided risks before the upcoming European tie.

“He has discomfort but keeps making a huge effort for the team. Today we preferred caution with Tuesday in mind,” the coach confirmed.

Real Madrid now travel to Lisbon to face Benfica in the Champions League playoff round. The winner will advance to the round of 16 and meet either Sporting CP or Manchester City.

For Alexander-Arnold, the match could mark another step in his adaptation to Spanish football. Madrid signed him for creativity and control from deep areas, qualities the team lacked in certain matches earlier this season.

With domestic momentum restored and key players returning, Arbeloa hopes performances like this confirm that the English defender will become a long-term pillar in Madrid’s system.
