Switzerland will be without one of their most dangerous attacking players when they face
Argentina in the
World Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Head coach Murat Yakin confirmed that Johan Manzambi has not recovered from the injury he suffered during a training session earlier in the tournament. The winger also missed Switzerland's previous match against Colombia, and the medical staff have ruled him out once again.
"Unfortunately, we still cannot count on Manzambi, and that is a big handicap for us," Yakin said ahead of the match.
The 20-year-old has emerged as one of the biggest revelations of this year's World Cup. Despite playing only 175 minutes, he has already scored three goals and provided two assists, making him Switzerland's most productive player on the tournament.
One of the tournament's breakout stars
Manzambi made his biggest impact in Switzerland's group-stage victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, coming off the bench to score twice in a convincing 4-1 win.
His outstanding performances have also attracted strong interest in the transfer market. According to multiple reports, the Freiburg winger is close to completing a move to Newcastle United, where he is expected to continue his career in the Premier League.
His absence represents a significant setback for Switzerland as they prepare to face Lionel Messi and defending world champions Argentina, one of the leading favourites to lift the trophy.
