Lionel Scaloni will double-mark Lamine Yamal in the Finalissima as Argentina prepare to face Spain in Qatar and limit the Barcelona teenager’s influence.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni is preparing a specific tactical approach to neutralise Lamine Yamal ahead of the Finalissima against Spain in Qatar.

The match will bring together the Copa America champions and the European champions, and for the first time place Yamal on the same pitch as Lionel Messi.

According to reports from Argentina, Scaloni will assign permanent support to his left-back. A midfielder will constantly drop deeper to form a two-versus-one defensive block whenever Yamal receives the ball on the right flank.

The goal is simple. Limit his acceleration, remove space for inside cuts, and force Spain to build attacks elsewhere.

The Barcelona winger has already faced similar treatment in La Liga, yet he continues to produce decisive numbers with 10 goals and 8 assists this season.

His ability to beat the first defender often destabilises entire defensive structures, which explains why opponents rarely leave him isolated in one-on-one situations anymore.

Argentina arrive as defending Finalissima winners after defeating Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022, when goals from Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala secured the trophy.

For Scaloni, controlling Yamal means controlling Spain’s rhythm. Much of Spain’s attacking width and progression depends on the teenager stretching defensive lines and creating passing lanes toward the centre.

Meanwhile, Spain head into the match seeking a response after their heavy cup defeat to Atletico Madrid. Coach Hansi Flick criticised his team’s intensity and demanded collective improvement.

“Defeats happen, but the reaction is what matters. We need to play as a team from the first minute,” Flick said.

The Finalissima therefore becomes more than a friendly. It offers a tactical duel between two football philosophies, Argentina’s structured defensive discipline and Spain’s positional attacking play built around a generational winger.

All eyes will be on how often Yamal escapes the double marking and how Argentina adjusts if he succeeds. The teenager’s performance could strongly influence the balance before the World Cup.
