Arsenal are on the verge of completing the signing of former Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who became a free agent after his contract expired at the end of last month.

The 26-year-old French goalkeeper is expected to undergo a medical before signing his contract at the Emirates Stadium, where he will provide experienced cover for Mikel Arteta's squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Meslier is set to become Arsenal's third-choice goalkeeper behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The move will allow highly rated youngster Tommy Setford, 20, to leave on loan in search of regular first-team football. Setford featured for only three minutes last season, coming on as a late substitute during Arsenal's 4-0 FA Cup victory over Wigan Athletic.

Meslier endured a difficult final campaign at Leeds, failing to make a single first-team appearance during the 2025/26 season after dropping behind Karl Darlow and Lucas Perri in the pecking order.

Leeds had hoped to sell the former Lorient goalkeeper last summer but were unable to find a buyer before eventually allowing his contract to run down.

Despite his recent lack of playing time, Meslier arrives with significant Premier League experience, having made 107 appearances in England's top flight. His last senior appearance came in Leeds' 2-2 draw against Swansea City in March 2025.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta continues to strengthen his squad after ending the club's 22-year wait for the Premier League title.

The Gunners have already completed the permanent signing of Piero Hincapié for £34.5 million following a successful loan spell, while Jakub Kiwior has joined FC Porto in a deal worth £14.8 million.

Goalkeeper Karl Hein has also departed permanently after completing a move to Werder Bremen, creating room in Arsenal's squad for Meslier's arrival.

Arsenal begin the defence of their Premier League title on August 21 with a home match against newly promoted Coventry City.
