Ethan Nwaneri will continue his development in the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund have officially confirmed the arrival of Arsenal's highly rated 19-year-old midfielder on loan until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The agreement does not include an option to buy, making Arsenal's intentions clear. The Premier League champions still see Nwaneri as an important player for the future but believe regular football in Germany is the best next step in his development.
Dortmund moved for the England youngster after suffering an injury blow involving Giannis Konstantelias. The 23-year-old Greek joined the Bundesliga club only a few weeks ago for €26m but subsequently suffered a knee injury and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Dortmund's reputation could help Nwaneri
For Nwaneri, the move represents an opportunity to join a club with an outstanding reputation for developing young players. Dortmund have repeatedly provided elite prospects with significant first-team responsibility, and the Arsenal youngster should have more opportunities to start regularly than he would currently receive in North London.
Nwaneri already gained experience away from Arsenal during the second half of last season, when he joined Marseille on loan. He recorded two goals and one assist in nine Ligue 1 appearances, although his opportunities remained limited to only 322 minutes. He also featured twice in cup competition.
Despite being only 19, Nwaneri has already made 51 senior appearances for Arsenal, underlining how highly he is regarded by the club.
Arsenal have no intention of giving up control of his future, which explains the absence of a purchase option in Dortmund's loan agreement. The objective is straightforward: Nwaneri needs minutes, responsibility and another step forward in his development before returning to London.
Now he will get that opportunity in one of Europe's strongest leagues – and at a club that has built its reputation on turning exceptional young talent into established stars.
