Arsenal have tied down Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Magalhães with a new long-term deal, rewarding his key role in the Premier League’s best defence over the last two seasons.
Arsenal have officially announced a new long-term contract for Gabriel Magalhães, the Brazilian centre-back who has become an indispensable part of Mikel Arteta’s system over the past five years.
Gabriel, 27, arrived at Arsenal from Lille in 2020 and has since made an impressive 210 appearances in all competitions. With 20 goals to his name, he is also the highest-scoring defender in the Premier League since his arrival.
"I came to Arsenal as a young player and after almost five years I’m really happy and proud of myself. I’ve learned a lot. It’s been a great journey and I’m happy to see it continue. I hope to win more trophies with Arsenal because I love this club and my family love it," said Gabriel after signing the deal.
Gabriel has played a key role in what has been statistically the Premier League’s best defence over the past two seasons. His consistency and physical dominance earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year for 2023/24.
He began the current campaign on a high by lifting the Community Shield, where Arsenal defeated Manchester City on penalties.
On the international stage, Gabriel made his debut for the Brazilian national team in November 2021. He now has 14 caps and scored his first international goal in a World Cup qualifier against Venezuela in October 2023.
This new contract further underlines his importance at the Emirates, as Arsenal look to build on their recent progress and challenge for major honours next season.
