Arsenal remains in talks over Julián Álvarez, but the Argentine prefers Barcelona and has not approved a return to the Premier League.

Arsenal are stepping up their attempt to sign Julián Álvarez before the summer transfer window closes, according to talkSPORT.
Sporting director Andrea Berta remains in contact with Álvarez’s representatives. Arsenal have also informed Atlético Madrid that they are ready to negotiate a major transfer.
Atlético have repeatedly insisted that the Argentina international is not for sale. The Spanish club want to keep their star forward, but Álvarez has grown frustrated with their position and wants to leave Madrid.
The former Manchester City player was omitted from Diego Simeone’s squad for Wednesday’s 2-0 La Liga victory over Málaga. His absence increased speculation surrounding his future.
Arsenal are prepared to bring Álvarez back to England, but the player has not yet approved the move. The final decision now rests with the 26-year-old forward.
Álvarez’s preferred destination is Barcelona. Atlético have no desire to strengthen a direct Spanish rival and have already rejected an offer worth £86 million from the Catalan club.
Atlético have pointed Barcelona towards Álvarez’s £432 million release clause. The Madrid club also rejected a reported £129 million proposal from Real Madrid earlier in the summer, viewing the bid as lacking genuine intent.
If Atlético decide to sell Álvarez, they would prefer to complete a deal with a club outside La Liga. This position gives Arsenal an opportunity during the closing days of the window.
Arsenal have explored the possibility of including Viktor Gyökeres in the negotiations. The Swedish striker would serve as part of a package designed to persuade Atlético to release Álvarez.
The Gunners started the defence of their Premier League title with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City. New signing Christos Tzolis impressed on his debut following a £34 million transfer.
Tzolis arrived after Leandro Trossard completed his move to Beşiktaş. Arsenal also missed out on Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior, but Mikel Arteta’s side entered the season as firm favourites to retain the title.
Gabriel Martinelli also faces an uncertain future. The Brazilian rejected an offer from Galatasaray and was left out of the squad against Coventry as clubs continued to monitor his situation.
Before the opening match, Arsenal presented Ezri Konsa following his £55 million arrival from Aston Villa. Fellow summer signing Bruno Guimarães missed the game through injury and now faces a spell away from the team.
Arsenal have made their position clear to Atlético. They are ready to complete the transfer, but Álvarez must now decide whether to wait for Barcelona or accept another opportunity in the Premier League.
