Arsenal’s secret weapon: The man players trust even more than Mikel Arteta

Behind Arsenal’s Premier League dominance stands Nicolas Jover — the set-piece genius who transformed the Gunners into Europe’s deadliest team from corners and free kicks.

Arsenal may play the most fluid and dominant football in Europe right now, but one of their greatest strengths isn’t just beautiful passing or possession. It’s set pieces — and behind them stands a man even players listen to more than Mikel Arteta: Nicolas Jover.

Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have developed into an elite, physically imposing side that has moved beyond the “Guardiolism” era. The Gunners now blend technical quality with organisation, intensity, and tactical precision — and one of their most decisive areas is dead-ball situations.

Arteta has long believed that mastering set pieces could be the hidden edge in modern football. “Ten years ago, I realised this would be crucial. I started visualising how to make it part of my football and surrounded myself with the best people,” he said recently. That “best person” turned out to be Nicolas Jover, the French specialist who has revolutionised Arsenal’s efficiency at corners and free kicks.

Jover’s influence began years ago. While working at Brentford, he earned a reputation as a master of restarts and defensive transitions. Later, during a short spell with Manchester City, he reduced their goals conceded from set pieces from 39% to 20%. Arteta was then Guardiola’s assistant, and he never forgot the impact Jover made.

When Arteta took over at Arsenal in late 2019, it was only a matter of time before he reunited with his trusted specialist. In July 2021, Jover officially joined Arsenal — and the transformation was instant. In the 2020/21 season before his arrival, Arsenal scored only six goals from set pieces, just 11% of their total. One year later, that number more than doubled to 26%.

Jover and Arteta share a common philosophy: set pieces are not isolated events. As Arteta once explained, “They’re part of the game’s rhythm. Everything connects — attacking flow, positioning, and second balls. Nicolas knows how to use that connection better than anyone.”

The results are astonishing. Since the start of the 2023/24 season, Arsenal have generated the highest xG from set pieces in Europe (38.91) and scored 24 goals from corners — six more than any other top-flight club. For context, those numbers are historic.

Opponents have taken notice too. Manuel Neuer, after Bayern Munich’s 3–1 defeat at the Emirates, put it bluntly: “I’ve never seen a team take corners like Arsenal. Every time they got one, it felt like a penalty.”

In modern football, where margins between elite teams are razor-thin, Jover’s meticulous work on positioning, delivery, and movement has made Arsenal almost unplayable from dead-ball situations. The players trust him implicitly — sometimes even more than Arteta — because his ideas deliver tangible results week after week.

With Jover orchestrating their set-piece brilliance, Arsenal’s long wait for a Premier League title could finally come to an end. If the Gunners lift the trophy, they’ll owe as much to their corners and free kicks as to their open-play magic — and to the quiet genius who turned them into an art form.
