Former Bosnia and Herzegovina goalkeeper Asmir Begović made his long-awaited return after 558 days, debuting for Leicester City in their 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough.

Asmir Begović, the 38-year-old former Bosnia and Herzegovina international, has finally returned to competitive football after 558 days, making his debut for Leicester City in the Championship.

Begović replaced injured goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk at half-time in Leicester’s 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, marking his first official appearance since April 26, 2024, when he last featured for Queens Park Rangers in a 4-0 win over Leeds United.

‘I’m happy to be back’

After the match, Begović expressed his delight at returning to the pitch and wished his teammate a speedy recovery. “I’m happy to finally play again and to make my debut for Leicester. I also hope Jakub recovers quickly,” he said.

The veteran shot-stopper joined Leicester earlier this season to provide experience and depth in goal, and his appearance ended a 558-day wait to return to competitive football.

Begović, who has enjoyed an impressive career spanning clubs like Portsmouth, Stoke City, Chelsea, and Everton, remains one of the most recognisable goalkeepers from the Balkans.
