Hajduk Split are reportedly close to signing former Belgium international Leander Dendoncker, who brings 152 Premier League appearances but has not played competitively since February.

Hajduk Split is on the verge of completing one of its most eye-catching transfers in recent years. According to reports in Croatia, former Aston Villa and Wolverhampton midfielder Leander Dendoncker is set to continue his career at Poljud.
The 31-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Real Oviedo on July 1, meaning Hajduk would not have to pay a transfer fee. An agreement is reportedly already in place, with official confirmation expected shortly.
Dendoncker is primarily expected to strengthen Hajduk in the defensive midfield role, although his versatility allows him to operate in several positions. His experience is considerable, with 152 Premier League appearances and ten goals during his years in England.
From a €15m Aston Villa transfer to Poljud
The Belgian developed at Anderlecht, winning two league titles before moving to England. Wolverhampton made his transfer permanent for around €14m in 2019, before Aston Villa paid approximately €15m for him three years later.
After losing his regular place at Villa, Dendoncker spent time on loan at Napoli and Anderlecht before eventually joining Real Oviedo. Last season he made 19 La Liga appearances and scored once.
Dendoncker also brings international experience, having represented Belgium 32 times and scored one goal. His current market value is estimated at around €1.8m, but Hajduk are set to acquire him without compensation.
One major question remains
The biggest concern is his fitness. Dendoncker has not played a competitive match for more than six months, with his last appearance coming against Real Sociedad on February 21, 2026, when he played 14 minutes.
He suffered a muscle injury in early March and experienced further problems while attempting to return. The injury ultimately required surgery, meaning Hajduk will need to carefully assess his physical condition before expecting an immediate impact.
If Dendoncker can rediscover full fitness, however, Hajduk would be adding a player who was worth around €15m only a few years ago and who has extensive experience in the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and international football.
