Tottenham hold a €25m clause for Johnny Cardoso this summer, but Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone are pushing to hijack the deal as the Betis star weighs his options.
Tottenham Hotspur may not have a clear path to sign Johnny Cardoso, despite negotiating a €25 million buyout clause with Real Betis. The clause, valid only from June 30 to July 10, gives Spurs a narrow window to activate the deal, but convincing the player remains a significant hurdle.
The 23-year-old U.S. international has enjoyed a standout season in La Liga, attracting interest from Atletico Madrid. Spanish media report that Diego Simeone sees Cardoso as a key midfield reinforcement and that the player himself prefers a move to Madrid over England.
Cardoso joined Betis in January from Brazilian side Internacional for around €6 million. Since then, he has quickly become a pillar in midfield, making 45 appearances and scoring four goals this season. He recently signed a new deal keeping him at Betis until 2030, further solidifying his value.
While Tottenham’s pre-agreed clause gives them an edge, Champions League qualification could prove decisive. The North London club will face Manchester United in the Europa League final tonight, with a win guaranteeing a spot in Europe’s elite competition — a detail that Cardoso is reportedly monitoring.
Born in New Jersey, Cardoso has Italian roots and represents the United States national team. His multi-continental background and rapid rise in Europe have made him one of the most intriguing midfield prospects on the market.
Whether Tottenham’s clause and Champions League carrot will outweigh Atletico’s growing interest remains to be seen, but the coming weeks promise a fierce battle for one of La Liga’s breakout stars.
