Atletico Madrid is preparing another big summer move, with Cristian Romero determined to leave Tottenham after tensions with the club and renewed interest from Spain.
Atletico Madrid are already shaping their summer transfer plans, and a familiar name has once again emerged at the top of their wish list.
After securing Ademola Lookman in January, the Spanish giants are now closely monitoring developments around Cristian Romero. The Tottenham defender is reportedly eager to leave north London and is pushing hard for a transfer once the season ends.
Respected Argentine journalist Gaston Edul claims the World Cup winner has made up his mind and intends to force an exit.
“Cristian Romero has offers from La Liga and another big league. Last summer, a transfer was very close. He will leave Tottenham in June,” Edul wrote.
Romero has not hidden his frustration in recent weeks. The centre-back publicly criticised Tottenham’s hierarchy over their lack of activity in the transfer market, especially during a period marked by serious injury problems across the squad.
Atletico Madrid were already heavily interested last summer, with Diego Simeone identifying Romero as a perfect fit for his defensive system. The player himself openly expressed his desire to move to La Liga, but negotiations collapsed.
The main obstacle was Tottenham’s valuation. The Premier League club demanded at least €70 million in compensation, a figure Atletico were unwilling to meet at the time.
With Romero now actively pushing for a departure and tensions rising in London, the conditions for a deal appear far more favourable. Atletico believes this summer could finally be the moment to land one of their top defensive targets.
If negotiations reopen under different terms, Romero could become one of the defining signings of Atletico Madrid’s next transfer window.
