Atlético Madrid intensifies its pursuit of Viktor Gyökeres, targeting the Swedish striker as Simeone’s ideal No.9 for summer 2025.

Atlético Madrid have intensified their efforts to sign Viktor Gyökeres, the prolific Swedish striker currently shining at Sporting CP, as they begin shaping their transfer plans for the 2025 summer window.

According to A Bola, the 26-year-old forward, who has scored 32 goals and delivered 11 assists in 36 games this season, is now considered Atlético’s priority target to lead the front line. With Antoine Griezmann’s future still uncertain and doubts persisting over Alexander Sørloth, Diego Simeone sees Gyökeres as the ideal No.9 to build around next season.

Sporting currently value their star forward between €70 and €80 million, a drop from the €100 million initially demanded earlier this year. Encouraged by a new sponsorship deal with Nike, which significantly boosts their financial capacity, Atlético plan to fund the move through potential sales of Sørloth or Ángel Correa, both of whom attract interest from clubs in Turkey and Mexico.

Simeone is reportedly keen to pair Gyökeres with Julián Álvarez, hoping to recreate a deadly duo that could rejuvenate Atlético’s attack after what has been a transitional 2025.

The rojiblancos will have to fend off strong competition from the Premier League, with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle United all monitoring the Swede. His physical presence, goalscoring instinct, and consistent output make him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.

Simeone hopes to win Gyökeres over by emphasising his proven track record in developing elite strikers, including Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa, and offering a leading role at one of La Liga’s most competitive clubs.
