Atlético Madrid explored a late winter move for Porto midfielder Gabri Veiga, but financial limits blocked a deal, leaving the door open for a renewed summer approach.

Atlético Madrid were among the most active clubs in Spain during the winter transfer window, and while several deals were completed, others remained unresolved. One of those unfinished stories involves Gabri Veiga.

As revealed by Fabrizio Romano and confirmed by Spanish daily AS, Atlético made a late exploratory move for the attacking midfielder, currently playing for FC Porto.

Budget, not ambition, the obstacle

The approach came in the final days of the window, when sporting director Mateu Alemany kept multiple options alive while eventually finalising the signings of Ademola Lookman, Rodrigo Mendoza and Obed Vargas.

Veiga was one of the doors Alemany knocked on, but the move never progressed to formal negotiations for a straightforward reason: finances. Porto had only recently invested heavily in the 23-year-old, paying €15 million for 90 percent of his rights, and Atlético’s available budget for that position could not match the valuation.

By comparison, Atlético’s winter outlay reached around €16 million in fixed fees for Mendoza — already stretching the limits of what the club had planned for January.

A familiar profile for Alemany

Veiga is no stranger to Atlético’s recruitment thinking. He had already been a priority target for Alemany during his time at Barcelona, and his return to European football has once again placed him firmly on the radar.

Alemany has consistently outlined his strategy: players who represent a clear step up in quality, with youth, projection and — ideally — Spanish nationality. Veiga fits that profile perfectly.

Bridges remain in place

While no official offer was submitted — Porto would not have accepted one in January — the interest was well received by the player. Veiga is settled and content in Porto, playing for a major club, but sources suggest he was genuinely encouraged by Atlético’s attention and is open to the idea of wearing red and white in the future.

The plan now is to reassess the situation in the summer transfer window, provided two conditions are met: that Veiga continues to deliver sustained, high-level performances, and that an understanding can be reached with Porto on financial terms.

For now, the move remains unfinished business — not a failed attempt, but a first step.
