Ademola Lookman’s arrival brings creativity and unpredictability to Atletico Madrid, which it lacked for years, highlighted by dominant cup wins over Betis and Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid spent years living between fear and ambition. Strong enough for the top four, rarely convincing enough for titles. The pattern looked permanent.
Then came Ademola Lookman.
Within two weeks, the team produced its most convincing football in years. First a 5-0 win over Betis, then a stunning 4-0 victory against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey. Not narrow, not defensive, but dominant.
The tactical change is clear. For seasons, the attack depended almost entirely on Antoine Griezmann. Recently Julian Alvarez added movement and finishing, yet something was still missing, unpredictability.
Lookman delivers exactly that. One-on-one play, acceleration, direct decisions in the final third, and constant movement between lines. He does not demand the game revolve around him, which keeps the balance of Diego Simeone's structure intact.
Numbers immediately followed. In his first three appearances, he recorded two goals and two assists, and the crowd at the Metropolitano already gave him a standing ovation.
"I'm very happy. Scoring is nice, but the team played really well. We were precise in the box and the fans gave us energy," said Lookman after the win.
"It's a big result, but we stay focused. More games are ahead, and we want to reach the final."
The partnership with Alvarez changes Atletico’s ceiling. Instead of reacting, they now dictate tempo in big matches. For the first time in years, opponents must prepare for Atletico’s attack rather than only their defense.
The club still sits in an inconsistent La Liga campaign, but the performances suggest a different trajectory. With Lookman, Atletico again looks like a side capable of troubling Europe’s elite.
