Hansi Flick criticizes VAR and referees after Barcelona's defeat to Atletico, claiming key decisions went against his team and calling for more protection for Lamine Yamal.
Hansi Flick did not hide his frustration after Barcelona’s defeat against Atletico Madrid, directing sharp criticism at the referees and the use of VAR.
The VAR referee Christian Dingert became the main target of his anger, as Flick openly questioned the decisions made during the match.
"VAR worked for Atletico Madrid. The referee was German, thank you, Germany!" he said sarcastically after the final whistle.
Strong criticism of VAR decisions
Flick went further and challenged the purpose of the system itself.
" I don't know why we have VAR. It's incredible. We all make mistakes, but what's the point of the technology? We should have gotten a penalty, the player a second yellow card, or a red card. That's unacceptable," he added.
Despite the defeat, the coach pointed out that Barcelona performed well.
" Barcelona played well, but they weren't lucky. But it's not over yet."
Calls for protection of Yamal
Flick also highlighted the treatment of Lamine Yamal, who was repeatedly fouled during the match.
"He played an incredible game. He's 18 years old, and he's going to be one of the best. Referees should protect him more than they protect Mbappe, Vinicius, or Pedri."
The young star still impressed his coach.
" Lamine is disappointed, of course, but he was excellent. He beat four or five players."
