Thomas Partey is close to leaving Arsenal, with Barcelona emerging as the favorite for his signature as a free agent in the summer.

Thomas Partey is likely to depart Arsenal at the end of the season unless a surprise transfer materializes during the current winter window. The Ghanaian international’s contract with the Gunners runs until June 30, 2025, but a renewal appears unlikely as Mikel Arteta has different plans for the midfield, excluding Thomas from his long-term vision.

Though Partey has been used as a defensive midfielder and occasionally as a right-back, Arsenal seems determined to move on. While Atlético Madrid—where Partey thrived under Diego Simeone—has shown interest, the FC Barcelona is reportedly leading the race to secure his services for next summer.

Barcelona’s precarious financial situation has pushed the club to target free agents, and Thomas will become one in the near future. From January 1, clubs can negotiate pre-contract agreements with players whose contracts expire in six months, and Barcelona has already initiated positive talks with Partey.

The Ghanaian is eager to return to LaLiga, and joining the Catalan giants appeals to him, especially as Atlético has yet to make a concrete move to bring him back. Partey is even reportedly willing to lower his wages to fit into Barcelona’s current salary structure.

For Barcelona, signing Thomas on a free transfer would be a cost-effective way to strengthen their midfield. The club is anticipating potential departures, with Frenkie De Jong frequently linked with a move away. Partey’s arrival would provide a reliable option in the midfield while helping the club navigate its financial challenges.
