Coach Xabi Alonso is building his team for the Champions League season and has set his sights on a fellow Spaniard who has excelled at Catalan top-tier side Girona this year.

Girona was one of the surprise packages of the season in La Liga. The Catalan club finished third and for much of the season kept pace with Real Madrid at the top of the league table. Several key players stood out and have consequently attracted interest from bigger clubs. One such player is 26-year-old captain Aleix Garcia.

Garcia is a Spanish midfielder who previously developed at Villarreal and Manchester City and at one point even played in Romania.

After a season with FC Dinamo, Garcia moved to Eibar and then joined Girona as a free agent in 2021. He has been linked with moves to more competitive environments multiple times this year, and German media report that a transfer to the Bundesliga is imminent.

A move to Bayer Leverkusen appears to be just around the corner, with the clubs ironing out the final details of the deal. The transfer fee is expected to be between €15-20 million, and Garcia has agreed to a five-year contract with the German league and cup champions. This season, he made 37 appearances for Girona in La Liga, contributing three goals and six assists.

Bayer Leverkusen's Spanish coach Xabi Alonso is reportedly very impressed with Aleix Garcia and will lead the 'Pharmacists' into the elite Champions League next season.
