Bayer Leverkusen are targeting Spanish-trained coaches to replace Xabi Alonso, with Cesc Fabregas, Xavi, and Imanol Alguacil all on the shortlist, alongside Dutchman Erik ten Hag.

Bayer Leverkusen are preparing for life after Xabi Alonso and have narrowed their search to a shortlist of four coaching candidates—three Spaniards and one Dutchman—according to Kicker.

Alonso, who led Bayer to unprecedented success, has confirmed his departure at the end of the season. The club’s top priority is to find a successor who can continue the team’s technical, possession-based football, heavily inspired by the Spanish football school.

Cesc Fabregas, currently making waves at Como in Italy, is a serious candidate. The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder has impressed with his tactical approach and has also attracted interest from RB Leipzig and Roma.

Also on the radar is Xavi, who recently stepped down as Barcelona head coach, and Imanol Alguacil, who confirmed he will leave Real Sociedad this summer after a successful stint.

Interestingly, all three Spanish coaches have also been linked with RB Leipzig, indicating that both Bundesliga clubs are pursuing a similar profile—one rooted in the principles of possession, positional play, and technical discipline.

The only non-Spanish name on Bayer's list is Erik ten Hag. The former Manchester United and Ajax coach is available and fits the tactical mold despite coming from the Dutch school of football, which shares many similarities with Spain's approach.

Leverkusen face a busy summer ahead—not only in the dugout. Several key players could be on the move, with Florian Wirtz attracting major attention from Europe's elite clubs.

With their future manager expected to preserve a distinct style of play, Leverkusen's post-Alonso era looks set to remain deeply rooted in Spanish footballing philosophy.
