Bayern Munich sign Jonathan Tah on a free transfer, weakening title rivals Bayer Leverkusen and reinforcing their defence with the experienced German international.
Jonathan Tah has officially become a Bayern Munich player, signing a four-year contract with the club after leaving Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer. The move, confirmed today, once again highlights Bayern’s longstanding strategy of weakening domestic rivals, this time by snatching a key defender from the team that beat them to the Bundesliga title last season.
The 29-year-old German international spent a decade at Leverkusen, where he was a central figure in their rise to Bundesliga glory under Xabi Alonso. With his contract set to expire at the end of June, Bayern acted swiftly to bring him to the Allianz Arena without paying a transfer fee.
Tah began his career at Hamburg, making his senior debut at just 17 years old, and also had a loan spell at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Since 2016, he has been part of the German national team, amassing valuable international experience.
While the exact start date for his involvement with Bayern remains uncertain due to his existing contract running until the end of the month, the club is set to compete at the Club World Cup before then. Whether Tah will be eligible to feature in that tournament is still unclear.
This move is not just a reinforcement for Bayern, but also a strategic blow to Leverkusen, as the Munich giants aim to reclaim domestic dominance next season.
