Bayern Munich blocked Leon Goretzka’s January exit despite Atletico Madrid interest. With his contract expiring in the summer, Atletico now rushes to secure midfield and attacking reinforcements.

Bayern Munich decided against selling Leon Goretzka in the January transfer window, despite strong interest from Atletico Madrid.

The German midfielder is entering the final six months of his contract and will leave Bayern as a free agent in the summer. Even so, the club refused to sanction a mid-season departure.

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed the club’s stance.

“Leon’s time at Bayern will end in the summer. After eight years, he will move on to a new challenge. Until then, we want to achieve something big together,” Freund said.

Atletico pushed for a deal late in the window but failed to convince Bayern, who preferred to keep Goretzka for the remainder of the campaign rather than weaken the squad.

The setback leaves Atletico under pressure. The Spanish club are now urgently searching for alternatives following the departure of Conor Gallagher, which created a gap in midfield.

According to Marca, Atletico revived interest in Ederson of Atalanta, while Davide Frattesi from Inter stands as another option.

Atletico’s concerns extend beyond midfield. The club also seek a new striker, with Igor Jesus of Nottingham Forest reported to be their primary target.

For Bayern, the priority remains stability through the final months of the season. For Atletico, missing out on Goretzka forced a late reshuffle of transfer plans at a critical stage.
