John Stones earned an England World Cup call-up, but Bayern Munich insists they are not planning a move for the departing Manchester City defender.

John Stones received two major updates in the same week, one positive and one disappointing.

The experienced England defender will travel to the 2026 World Cup, but his reported move to Bayern Munich will not happen.

Speculation around Stones increased after reports suggested the defender could leave Manchester City this summer following a decade at the club.

With his contract situation attracting attention and the possibility of becoming available on a free transfer, Bayern were mentioned as one of the destinations.

But Bayern sporting director Max Eberl moved quickly to reject the reports.

"The rumors about John Stones are not true. We have already extended several contracts, and our squad is in excellent condition, so there will not be many summer changes. However, we are interested in players for one or two positions."

That statement appears to close the door on a move to Germany for now.

For Stones, attention now shifts to international football.

Despite an injury-hit season, England coach Thomas Tuchel included the 31-year-old in his World Cup squad.

The decision surprised some observers.

Stones struggled physically throughout the campaign and made only eight league appearances.

Even so, his experience and leadership remain highly valued.

His numbers underline that status.

Stones leaves Manchester City with 294 appearances and a remarkable collection of 19 trophies, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League crown.

At the international level, he has already collected 87 appearances for England.

His next challenge now comes on football's biggest stage.

And while Bayern will not be part of his immediate future, there is still strong interest elsewhere across Europe.
