Bayern Munich sign Salzburg talent Matteo Marić, a 16-year-old attacking midfielder with multiple national team options, including Slovenia.
Bayern Munich has secured one of Austria’s brightest young prospects, signing Matteo Marić from Salzburg in a move driven by sporting director Christoph Freund.
The 16-year-old attacking midfielder is widely regarded as one of the top talents of his generation in Austrian football and has already featured for the Austria U17 national team.
Freund, who previously worked at Salzburg, continues to rely on his deep knowledge of the club’s talent pipeline. He played a key role in identifying players like Benjamin Šeško in the past, and Marić now follows a similar path.
Despite his role as an attacking midfielder, Marić has produced remarkable numbers at youth level, scoring 95 goals in 141 matches, highlighting his offensive impact and finishing ability.
At Bayern, his next step will be development within the academy system, with the long-term goal of reaching the first team.
His international future adds another layer to the story. While he currently represents Austria, Marić also has Croatian roots and has been linked to eligibility for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
There is also a lesser-known option, his mother was born in Slovenia, meaning he could, in theory, qualify to represent the country if he obtains citizenship.
With multiple pathways both at club and international level, Matteo Marić is a name to watch closely in the coming years.
