With Florian Wirtz opting for Liverpool, Bayern Munich are now eyeing Rafael Leao as their top offensive reinforcement for the summer.
Bayern Munich have shifted their focus to a new marquee target after losing out in the race for Florian Wirtz, who has reportedly chosen to join Liverpool this summer. According to Sky Germany, the Bundesliga giants are now seriously considering a move for Rafael Leao, the AC Milan winger who has long hinted at a desire to take the next step in his career.
While Bayern haven’t yet ruled themselves out of the Wirtz saga—negotiations between Liverpool and Leverkusen are still ongoing—the club’s leadership is wasting no time in preparing alternative options.
In recent days, names like Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) and Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton) have been mentioned. But it is Leao who is now emerging as the frontrunner, and he has already received a high-profile endorsement.
"Bayern need something fresh on the flanks. Rafael Leao would be a great solution," said club legend Lothar Matthäus. "He plays as a left winger but can also move centrally. That versatility is exactly what Bayern need, especially as a backup when Harry Kane needs a rest."
Leao, 25, has been one of Serie A’s most explosive forwards over the past few years. In the 2024/25 season, he scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in 50 appearances for Milan. His speed, flair, and technical ability would bring a different dimension to Bayern's attack, particularly under a new manager still to be appointed.
It’s unclear how receptive Milan would be to selling, but Leao’s market value—combined with the player’s subtle hints about leaving—could open the door for negotiations in the coming weeks.
