Yesterday, Boca extended Edinson Cavani’s contract, and today they’ve secured a new coach. Will the team finally hit their stride in the Argentine league?
The legendary Argentine club Boca Juniors is enduring a miserable season by their standards, and it’s time for change at the 35-time national champions. Fans were delighted yesterday by the news that Edinson Cavani agreed to fresh terms, keeping him at the club until the end of 2026. Now, a new coach is coming, and he will be unveiled soon.
All signs point to 38-year-old Fernando Gago taking the job. Gago, a product of Boca’s youth academy, has also played for Real Madrid and Valencia during his career.
Currently employed in Mexico at Chivas, which he took over on January 1st, Boca has reportedly already reached an agreement regarding compensation, and the former midfielder will soon be confirmed as the new coach at the club where he started his football journey.
Before Chivas, Gago managed Aldosivi and Racing Club in Argentina, spending two years at the latter. Now, he is set to tackle the biggest challenge of his managerial career. Known as a young and ambitious coach, Gago hung up his boots in November 2020 while playing for Vélez Sarsfield, and just two months later, he became Aldosivi’s coach.
Fernando Gago was also a long-time Argentine international, making 61 appearances for his country and featuring in the World Cup.
