Boca Juniors is nearing a deal to sign Ander Herrera from Athletic Club, aiming to bolster their squad with the experienced midfielder before the new season begins.
Boca Juniors is reportedly on the verge of signing Ander Herrera, with the 35-year-old midfielder nearing the end of his contract at Athletic Club. According to Relevo, Boca has already initiated talks with Athletic to facilitate a transfer during the current window.
Although Herrera joined Athletic on a free transfer after leaving PSG, the Basque club is unlikely to let him leave without compensation. With a market value of €1.5 million, Athletic considers Herrera an important part of Ernesto Valverde’s project despite his limited playing time. This season, Herrera has started just three games and appeared in a total of 14 matches, accumulating 419 minutes on the pitch.
For Boca, Herrera’s experience and desire to play for a historic club like theirs are major advantages. Boca Juniors, set to participate in the Club World Cup, hopes to secure his services quickly to have him available for the start of the new season. The team will kick off its campaign in the Copa against Argentino Monte Maíz before opening the Apertura against Argentinos Juniors.
After finishing 6th in the 2024 season—below rivals River Plate and nine points behind champions Vélez Sarsfield—Boca aims to strengthen its squad. Adding Herrera, who has played for clubs like Manchester United, PSG, and Real Zaragoza, could be key to their ambitions.
