Borussia Dortmund are targeting Freiburg's Ritsu Doan as a potential key summer signing, hoping to revive memories of Japanese fan-favourite Shinji Kagawa.
Borussia Dortmund are considering a move for Ritsu Doan, the in-form Japanese international currently impressing at Freiburg, as the club prepares for a summer squad overhaul aimed at restoring its Bundesliga and Champions League ambitions.
The 26-year-old attacking midfielder has delivered nine goals and eight assists in the Bundesliga this season, marking himself as one of the most productive creative players outside the league’s top four. His standout performances have not gone unnoticed, with Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt both expressing interest ahead of the transfer window.
Ritsu Doan is seen as a potential long-term successor to Shinji Kagawa, the beloved Japanese playmaker who spent seven successful years at Dortmund across two stints. Kagawa played a pivotal role during Dortmund’s golden era under Jürgen Klopp, helping the club win titles and reach a Champions League final. His legacy still resonates with fans at Signal Iduna Park.
Doan has clearly outgrown Freiburg and is believed to be seeking a new challenge. Valued at around €22 million, the transfer would be within reach for Dortmund, who are also reportedly looking to offload several fringe players to make space for fresh talent.
As Dortmund prepare to retool their squad for a stronger title push and improved European performance next season, Doan’s technical ability, work rate, and versatility make him a strong candidate to take on a starring role in Edin Terzić’s plans.
