Tottenham took a 1-0 lead against Manchester United at the break in the Europa League final, with Brennan Johnson scoring his fifth European goal of the season in Bilbao.

Tottenham hold a narrow 1-0 lead over Manchester United at halftime in the Europa League final at San Mames, as they edge closer to ending their long wait for a major trophy.

In a tense and cautious first half, both teams were aware of the stakes, knowing the title also brings Champions League qualification. The match was largely balanced, though United showed more intent going forward in spells.

But it was Spurs who found the breakthrough in the 42nd minute. A cross from Pape Matar Sarr deflected slightly, and Brennan Johnson pounced, bundling the ball awkwardly but effectively into the net for his fifth goal in Europe this season.

The goal stunned United, who had looked defensively solid until that point. Erik ten Hag’s side will feel they gifted Spurs the lead, and will need to raise their level after the break if they are to mount a comeback.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are now just 45 minutes away from what would be their first major trophy since the 2008 League Cup. The pressure is huge, but with the lead and growing confidence, this could be the night they finally lift European silverware again.
