Bruno Fernandes has matched the Premier League single-season assist record and now has one final opportunity to surpass Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Bruno Fernandes is now only one step away from making Premier League history.
The Manchester United captain registered his 20th assist of the league season during today’s victory over Nottingham Forest, officially matching the all-time single-season Premier League record.
The achievement was previously reached only by Thierry Henry and later equaled by Kevin De Bruyne during the 2019/20 campaign.
Fernandes will now have one final opportunity to break the record outright when United face Brighton in the last round of the season.
The Portuguese playmaker admitted after the match that his teammates were fully aware of the milestone and actively tried to help him reach it.
"My teammates had it in their heads that I was just one assist away from equalling the record and they were really trying to get it today."
Fernandes also explained that he did not want to force the situation unnaturally during the match.
"There were also moments when I could have passed the ball, but I was in a position to shoot and I didn't want to pass just to maybe reach the milestone."
Manchester United actually wasted several strong chances against Forest, meaning Fernandes realistically could have ended the afternoon with even more assists.
Throughout the season, the Portuguese international has consistently been viewed as one of the strongest individual performers in English football.
Even during difficult periods for United, Fernandes regularly carried the creative burden and remained the central figure in the team’s attacking play.
Now one final match remains to determine whether he will stand alone in Premier League history.
