The Portuguese giant has announced its new coach, entrusting the role to a manager who has previously led the team.

Bruno Lage has been confirmed as the new (and returning) head coach of Benfica, a club currently not experiencing its finest moments after recently dismissing Roger Schmidt. Lage previously managed Benfica and won the league title in his first season, only to be dismissed halfway through the second. He later had a stint at Wolverhampton, but the 48-year-old coach didn’t leave a significant mark there either.

Without any noteworthy offers from Europe, Lage moved to Brazil and signed with Botafogo, but the episode lasted only from mid-July to the end of October.

This year, Lage found himself without a coaching job and, during the summer, didn’t receive any attractive offers. Now, he is once again being given the opportunity to lead Benfica. However, the mood among fans isn’t particularly optimistic, with most of the support coming from Sporting and Porto fans, who are enjoying the uncertainty.

It will be interesting to see how Lage fares this time. He doesn’t appear to have much room for mistakes, and he will need to start winning domestically very quickly.
