Bulgarian football icon Luboslav Penev is battling kidney cancer, with his condition described as extremely serious by local media.

Bulgaria has been shaken by deeply troubling news. Luboslav Penev, one of the greatest footballers the country has ever produced, has been hospitalised after doctors diagnosed him with kidney cancer. According to Bulgarian outlet GOL, the 57-year-old’s condition is extremely serious.

Reports say Penev has lost significant weight in recent months and his body is so weakened that chemotherapy is currently not an option. The news has stunned Bulgarian football circles, supporters and the wider region.

The Bulgarian FA issued an emotional message:

“One of our greatest legends is fighting for his life. Luboslav Penev gave us victories, pride and strength – now we must give him hope. Let us stand together for a man who never stopped giving to Bulgaria.”

Penev rose to prominence at CSKA Sofia, just like the nation’s most celebrated player Hristo Stoichkov, before building a distinguished international career. He played abroad for Atlético Madrid, Valencia, and other clubs, leaving a lasting impression wherever he went.

He was a key part of Atlético Madrid’s 1995/96 title-winning squad, coached by the late Radomir Antić – the club’s last league championship before Diego Simeone’s era began many years later.

For Bulgaria, he collected 62 caps and 14 goals between 1987 and 1998 and became one of the pillars of a generation still considered the best in the nation’s history.

However, a cruel twist denied him a place in Bulgaria’s greatest football story.

Penev was supposed to be a core member of the legendary 1994 World Cup team, which stunned the world by reaching the semi-finals in the United States. But at that time, he was undergoing treatment for testicular cancer, which forced him to miss the tournament. Bulgaria finished a historic fourth, led by Stoichkov, Yordan Letchkov, Emil Kostadinov and Krasimir Balakov.

Penev later returned to the national team setup, representing Bulgaria at Euro 1996 and the 1998 World Cup. He is also the nephew of Dimitar Penev, the iconic coach who guided Bulgaria during its unforgettable 1994 campaign.

Today, Bulgaria is united in hope as one of its greatest heroes faces the toughest battle of his life.
