Freiburg becomes the third Bundesliga club to leave Platform X, citing hate speech and Elon Musk’s promotion of harmful content. The club will join BlueSky instead.
The Bundesliga continues to see a growing exodus from Platform X (formerly Twitter), as clubs distance themselves from what they describe as a platform fostering hate, radicalization, and the undermining of diversity and tolerance.
On Monday, SC Freiburg announced its immediate withdrawal from X, joining St. Pauli and Werder Bremen, which had already left the platform. The club issued a statement explaining the decision:
"SC Freiburg is immediately ceasing its activities on Platform X. Values such as diversity and tolerance, which our club upholds and are enshrined in our statutes, are being trampled on this platform."
The statement highlighted concerns about the platform’s direction under Elon Musk, who took over two years ago:
"The rapid radicalization of the platform is marked by a flood of hate, incitement, and conspiracy theories. Regulation and sanctions barely exist anymore. On the contrary, Elon Musk personally promotes and amplifies the publication of such content."
Freiburg emphasized that remaining on X was no longer compatible with their identity:
"We’ve reached a point where our club can no longer afford to simply ‘continue as usual.’ Taking a stand against xenophobia, racism, and discrimination is part of our fundamental identity. Considering the current development of Platform X, continuing activities there is no longer justified."
Like St. Pauli and Werder Bremen, Freiburg has decided to shift its focus to the emerging social media platform BlueSky.
