Following St. Pauli and Werder Bremen, SC Freiburg has announced its departure from X (formerly Twitter), citing concerns over hate speech and the erosion of core values.
SC Freiburg has become the latest Bundesliga club to abandon the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The decision follows similar moves by St. Pauli and Werder Bremen, with all three clubs criticizing the platform for fostering an environment that undermines diversity and tolerance. Freiburg shared a detailed statement explaining their decision:
"SC Freiburg is immediately ending its activities on platform X. Values such as diversity and tolerance, which our club stands for and are embedded in our statutes, are being trampled upon on this platform.
"The rapid radicalization of the platform is marked by an influx of hate, incitement, and conspiracy theories. Regulation and sanctions are virtually non-existent. On the contrary, Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter two years ago, personally promotes and amplifies such content.
"We have reached a point where our club can no longer afford to simply ‘carry on as usual.’ Taking a stand against xenophobia, racism, and discrimination is part of our core identity. Given the current trajectory of platform X, continuing our activities there is no longer justifiable."
Freiburg also announced that it would, like St. Pauli and Werder, transition to BlueSky, an alternative social media platform. The statement underscores the growing concern within the Bundesliga about X's transformation under Musk’s ownership and its alignment with the league's values.
