Legendary Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro believes that there’s currently only one player in Serie A who could play for Real Madrid or Manchester City.
France Football recently released the list of 30 candidates for the Ballon d'Or, with three Serie A players making the cut this year – Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu from Inter, and Ademola Lookman from Atalanta.
Fabio Cannavaro, the last defender to win the Ballon d'Or, commented on the nominations and shared his view that only one player in Italy could currently wear the shirts of Real Madrid or Manchester City.
“No one should doubt Lautaro Martinez. He won the scudetto and the Copa America, and he always makes a difference. I hope Serie A and Inter never lose him. When I think of Serie A players who could play for City or Real Madrid, I can only think of Lautaro – no one else,” said Cannavaro.
Cannavaro also mentioned his favorites for the prestigious award.
“Vinicius and Jude Bellingham, although the latter wasn’t as good in the second half of the season as he was in the first. Mbappe didn’t have a great season, but of course, he’s still an obvious candidate. Then there’s Rodri and Carvajal. Carvajal has won everything, but as a defender, you have to do something truly incredible to win this award,” said Cannavaro, who last coached Udinese.
