Carlo Ancelotti believes Brazil already has world-class attackers and defenders, but says the country's future depends on producing elite midfielders after their disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign.

Carlo Ancelotti has wasted no time analysing what went wrong for Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following the Seleção's disappointing campaign, the experienced Italian coach has identified the team's biggest weakness – the lack of elite midfielders.
According to Ancelotti, Brazil already possess outstanding talent in attack and defence, but must strengthen the heart of the team if they want to challenge for the 2030 World Cup.
"If new players emerge, midfielders of exceptional quality, then of course you can build a team based on possession. We have to monitor the development of the next generation of midfielders. I believe we are very well covered in attack and defence for the future. Now we have to find world-class midfielders," Ancelotti said.
Brazil's midfield options at the 2026 World Cup included Fabinho, Casemiro, Bruno Guimarães, Lucas Paquetá, Danilo Santos and Ederson, but Ancelotti believes the country must produce a new generation capable of controlling matches at the highest level.
The Italian stressed that Brazilian clubs will play a decisive role in solving the problem.
"When developing talent, the connection with clubs is fundamental. Clubs shape these players every day. The national team can help, but only in cooperation with the clubs. In the future, we want to strengthen those relationships because we need to focus much more on developing midfielders," he explained.
Ancelotti also pointed to Spain as the perfect example of why midfield quality is the foundation of success.
"The team that won the World Cup, Spain, dominated possession. But people also forget they conceded only one goal during the entire tournament. They could control every match because they have an incredible generation of midfielders."
The Brazil coach then listed the players he believes make the difference.
"They have Fabián Ruiz, Rodri, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Martín Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Gavi. Seven of the best midfielders in the world. That's why they were able to control games and become world champions."
For Ancelotti, Brazil's mission over the next four years is now clear: continue producing elite forwards while rebuilding a midfield capable of matching the world's very best.
