Carlo Ancelotti analyzed Real Madrid’s tense Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano, explaining key tactical decisions and his approach to the decisive penalty shootout.
One of the biggest talking points was the disallowed penalty from Julian Alvarez, which proved costly for Atletico. Ancelotti admitted he initially did not notice the infringement but agreed with the referee’s decision.
"They had already detected it from VAR when we noticed it. I didn't see it at first, but then I saw it and it seems clear that he took a second touch with his left foot," Ancelotti explained.
Reflecting on the game, Ancelotti highlighted the challenge of breaking down Atletico's disciplined defense after conceding in the first minute.
"The match was difficult, complicated as always, even more so after the early goal. After that, the plan was clear: avoid risks, maintain possession, and wait for the right moments to attack," he said.
When it came to selecting the five penalty takers, Ancelotti admitted the decision for the final spot was between Antonio Rüdiger and Endrick.
"We had doubts about the fifth penalty taker. We wanted Endrick, but then I saw his face and I decided Rüdiger was the better option," Ancelotti revealed.
The decision paid off, as Rüdiger converted the winning penalty to send Real Madrid into the Champions League quarter-finals, where they will face Arsenal.
