Getafe supporters sparked outrage during their La Liga match against Real Madrid with abusive chants aimed at midfielder Dani Ceballos, forcing the referee to stop play and issue a stadium warning.
Referee Sanchez Martinez paused the match in the second half after repeated chants of “Ceballos, die” were heard from the stands. The stadium announcer immediately intervened, urging fans to stop the chanting, which clearly crossed the line of acceptable behavior.
The incident stems from a long-running grudge dating back to 2016, when Ceballos—then a Real Betis player—made controversial remarks during a relegation battle involving Getafe. “I hope you rot in the second division and fail,” he reportedly said at the time. Those words have not been forgotten by a section of the Getafe fanbase.
Ceballos, now with Real Madrid, was booed throughout the match and targeted directly, even though nearly eight years have passed since the original comments.
After the game, Borja Mayoral, a former Real Madrid player now with Getafe, publicly defended his opponent. “No footballer should have to experience this,” Mayoral stated, calling out the toxic atmosphere.
La Liga has made efforts in recent seasons to clamp down on abusive fan behavior, but this incident serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted rivalries—and the dangers of letting them turn personal and hateful.
