Southampton became the target of fresh jokes after the Australian club Central Coast Mariners mocked the ongoing Spygate controversy.
Southampton's Spygate controversy has spread far beyond England and has now become material for jokes on the other side of the world.
After being removed from the Championship play-off final following an independent disciplinary decision, the club has found itself under growing public scrutiny and mockery.
The latest to join in were the Australian side Central Coast Mariners.
The club shared a short video on social media showing a large snake moving through their training ground facilities.
But the post quickly turned into a joke aimed directly at Southampton.
The caption read:
" An unexpected visitor at our training ground today... Not a Southampton spy, just this guy."
The post quickly attracted reactions from supporters.
Some joked about whether the snake was actually connected to Southampton, while others described the situation as one of football’s most unusual scandals of the season.
The controversy began after Middlesbrough reported suspicious activity near their training ground before the Championship play-off semi-final.
The individual involved was later identified as intern William Salt, after images circulated showing him near Middlesbrough’s facilities.
Southampton were later found guilty and excluded from the play-off final, with Hull City and Middlesbrough becoming the new final pairing.
The club has appealed the decision.
Reports in England also claim some Southampton players are unhappy due to financial consequences linked to missing out on the final.
Meanwhile, outside the club, reactions continue to spread.
What started as a disciplinary case in English football has unexpectedly become an international talking point and social media joke.
