Xabi Alonso has reflected on his difficult spell at Real Madrid, admitting the experience left a lasting mark but ultimately made him a better coach.

Xabi Alonso has spoken openly for the first time about his difficult spell as Real Madrid head coach, admitting the experience left emotional scars but also helped shape him into a stronger manager.
Now beginning a new chapter with Chelsea, the Spaniard says the setbacks he experienced at the Santiago Bernabéu have become some of the most valuable lessons of his coaching career.
After his historic success with Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso returned to Real Madrid as one of the most highly rated young coaches in world football. Expectations were enormous, with many believing the former midfielder was the ideal man to lead the club into a new era.
Instead, he quickly discovered why managing Real Madrid is regarded as one of football's most demanding jobs.
Every result was scrutinised, every tactical decision questioned, and every setback magnified. Despite the disappointment, Alonso insists he never searched for excuses.
"You have to be your own coach, have your own style and your own way of thinking," Alonso said while reflecting on the experience.
The Spaniard explained that his coaching philosophy has been shaped by some of the greatest managers of the modern era, including Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti.
Rather than simply copying those mentors, Alonso says he has combined their influence with lessons learned from his own successes and failures.
"Madrid left me with a scar"
Perhaps the most revealing part of Alonso's interview came when discussing how his time at Real Madrid affected him personally.
"I got a scar, but now it has healed. When I look back, I remember both the positive things and what did not work. I was very self-critical, and I thought about what I could have done better because things did not go the way I expected."
The comments underline just how demanding his spell at the Bernabéu proved to be. Although Alonso had already enjoyed enormous success as both a player and coach before arriving in Madrid, he admits the club presented a completely different level of pressure.
A fresh start at Chelsea
Alonso now hopes to put those experiences to good use at Chelsea, where he has been entrusted with leading another ambitious rebuilding project.
According to reports from England, the former Spain international is working to reshape the dressing-room culture by blending talented young players with experienced leaders while establishing a clear football identity.
His philosophy has remained consistent since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
"Success comes as a result of good work, the right decisions and the good culture that we build," Alonso said after taking charge.
Real Madrid may not have delivered the ending he dreamed of, but Alonso believes the experience ultimately strengthened him. Now, with Chelsea, he is determined to prove that the hardest chapter of his coaching career has prepared him for the next one.
