After signing for Chelsea in a €35 million deal, Liam Delap will miss the U-21 European Championship, including the key match against Slovenia, to attend the Club World Cup.
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, activating his €35 million release clause and tying the young striker to the club until 2031.
The 21-year-old forward, who scored 12 goals in his first full Premier League season, arrives at Stamford Bridge already familiar with manager Enzo Maresca, having previously worked under him in the Manchester City youth setup.
"I understand the size and status of the club and the process that it's going through with these players and the manager. I'm coming into a great environment to develop and I hope to win a lot of trophies here," Delap said following the announcement.
Delap was included in England's U-21 squad for the European Championship in Slovakia, where the Three Lions will face Slovenia in a crucial group stage fixture. However, due to Chelsea's participation in the Club World Cup in the United States, Delap is now expected to miss the tournament.
This development comes as an unexpected advantage for Slovenia, who will now avoid facing one of England's key young talents during the group phase. Delap’s absence could significantly alter the dynamics of the group and offers Slovenia a better shot at progressing.
